Uliana Drugova is a young professional violinist who performs with many ensembles, such as The Ensemble Arkea and the Saguenay Symphonic Orchestra. I attended one of her concerts and I felt so inspired by her. I approached her to ask her to be a part of my artist paper project. I got to know her more and learned that she is also a trained ballerina dancer. This led me to try to explore a thematic of lightness. I commissioned my friend and designer Kelly Kwon to create a dress made of paper. I felt that this would be a magical way to represent both the swirling musical side of Uliana and her iridescent ballerina aura.
During the photo shoot, we explored different ways to use the space. We ended up creating a box with a tall foam core around Uliana.
After the photo session, Uliana asked me if I was available to take some portaits of her for her professional portfolio. I promptly changed my studio’s set up and got it ready for a portrait session while Uliana changed her outfit. We then took a few photos of her in different poses, integrating her violin in the shots.
Uliana now uses her portrait in her concert programs and promotional material. The agency intelliproductions now uses the paper dress photo for their promotional banners.
